In 2009, a brilliant idea was hatched—cutting out all the filler in Dragon Brawl Z (DBZ)! This endeavor turned intoDragon Ball Z Kai (Kai), and the results were stunning, to say the least. The hefty 291-episode run of DBZ condensed to an unimaginably scant 167 episodes. And while Frieza's "Five minutes" merits nonetheless isn't five minutes, that 10-episode battle(DBZ Episodes 97-106) is now simply five (Kai Episodes 49-53).

With Kai, the creators and editors did a tremendous job retaining the original series' construction and story while trimming any unnecessary fat. And with all the changes that happened, in that location are plenty of tiny changes, details, and inconsistencies you might have overlooked in just the first episode alone!

x A Bit Of Japanese

Anime Dragon_Ball_Z_Kai_Logo2

Directly above, you'll run across the championship menu forKai. And at the end of the lightning commodities, you'll find this symbol, 改. That symbol, spoken out loud, is pronounced "Kai". However, when ane translates that symbol, it ways to correct, to modify, to change, or to modify.

It'south a fun, trivial touch because anyone reading Japanese would understand that this anime is "ModifiedDragon Ball Z". But for American audiences, that may take been too on the nose—we read and say the sound representing the symbol instead of its literal translation.

9 Goku'southward Origin Is Changed

There'southward no reason to bring up Goku'south origin from the Dragon Ball Super flick, as that version is wildly different from its predecessors. Simply a pocket-sized change does be between Kai and DBZ.

During the five-minute recap at the offset of Kai, there is a scene showing Grandpa Gohan finding Babe Goku in a meadow side by side to the space pod crater. Just in the 2nd episode of DBZ, Grandfather Gohan finds Goku at the bottom of the crater, inside his space pod. It's such a bizarre alteration, one wonders why it was fabricated.

viii Good day Censors!

It was a dissimilar time whenDBZkickoff aired. To Funimation, what young children would run into on their programs was their first and largest business organisation, leading to a smorgasbord of wild edits in DBZ.

Two of the near meaning re-revisions in this get-go episode deal with drugs and alcohol. In the 1996 edit ofDBZ, Funimation painstakingly colored out the farmer'southward cigarette when Raditz crashed to Globe. Subsequently on at Kame House, Funimation would have yous believe Master Roshi is drinking a frothy mug of water. It wasn't until 2009 that Roshi finally got to enjoy that beer.

vii Hi, Aspect Ratios!

Kai non only trimmedDBZ merely gave information technology a facelift! ConsideringDBZ is an anime from the '80s and '90s, everything is in a iv:3 attribute ratio. While doingKai, they bumped information technology to xvi:9 to lucifer modern televisions.

This move appears to have resulted in the editing team doing FAR more work than usual. Many scenes appear to have been cropped, just in some cases, information technology appears they had to draw new tops and bottoms for scenes. It's a crazy amount of work because most wouldn't detect information technology unless they were watching the two anime side-by-side.

6 A Make New Bulma

For 13 years, in every dubbed series, flick, video game, etc., Tiffany Vollmer voiced our favorite blue-haired graphic symbol, Bulma. Nonetheless, whenKai premiered, Vollmer was no longer Bulma. In her stead, the voice of Bulma became Monica Rial—a function Rial continues to phonation to this day.

This doesn't end there. 1 would figure that Vollmer would continue vox acting in some capacity, simply no. It appears as if Vollmer retired from voice acting and potentially interim altogether. Since doing Bulma's voice in the 2010 video game, Dragon Brawl: Origins 2, Vollmer only has two acting credits to her name, the most contempo coming in 2016.

five Yamcha's Infidelity

We all know that Yamcha is a complete and utter buffoon, but this takes it to a new level. When Bulma appears at Kame House, Krillin and Master Roshi inquire where Yamcha is. InKai, Bulma never gives a definitive reason, simply stating, "Yamcha, that jerk!... He could be out chasing every girl in the city for all I care!".

This line though is heavily altered from the original dub ofDBZ. In that version, Bulma states, "I never want to see him again. We're finished!... He went out with another girl!". There is a flake of a silver lining—if not for Yamcha's stupidity, Trunks wouldn't exist.

4 Raditz's Attack Proper noun Is Omitted

Raditz and Piccolo take a minor altercation during their start encounter. Raditz is about to attack Piccolo when his scouter picks up on Goku's ability—causing him to abandon the fight. InKai, they skip over the name of the attack Raditz was threatening to use, only inDBZ, Raditz claims he's going to apply his "Double Sun" attack.

DBZexperts might recognize this every bit the set on Raditz subsequently uses in his fight versus Piccolo and Goku. And considering Piccolo loses his left arm to "Double Sunday", he should be thankful Goku'due south power popped up when it did.

3 An Improved Cliffhanger

1 of the many benefits of condensing this series is finding means to drag this already great anime. And upon rewatching the first episode ofDBZ, 1 thing is evident—the bewilderment is extremely lackluster. InDBZ, the offset episode ends with Raditz flying towards Goku after abandoning his fight with Piccolo. InKai, Raditz makes it to Kame House, reveals Goku is an alien and his brother, and tail whips Krillin through the side of the business firm.

This ending helps instill in the audition a greater sense of Raditz's ability, fear for our heroes, and tension for the next episode. Information technology is the far superior cliffhanger.

two Gohan's Reappearing Hat

There are, withal, some minor downsides to Kai'south condensing. Splicing and chopping footage tin can upshot in the occasional inconsistency, and in that location is no greater evidence of that than Gohan'south reappearing hat. InKai, nosotros meet Gohan (sans hat) as he's talking to a bird on a log. The bird flies away and causes the log to shift.

The log dislodges and sends Gohan hurtling into some rapids, through a cave, and towards a waterfall. Goku finds Gohan clinging to a branch far In a higher place the waterfall, and without a discussion of dialogue, the hat falls out of the sky and onto Gohan's head. In the unedited version ofDBZ, we find out a tiger stole and ran abroad with Gohan's hat. Goku later finds the tiger while looking for Gohan and reclaims the chapeau, placing it on Gohan'southward head upon their reunion. See! Information technology wasn't magic—simply baroque editing!

1 Turtle, Turtle?

A few 0f you savvyDBZveterans may accept defenseless the change in Bulma's voice extra. Simply how many of you sussed out that Turtle besides had a new voice actor? That'south right! InDBZ, Turtle was voiced by the immortal Christopher Sabat.

But when it came time to reprise the all-important function of Turtle, the reins were given to Chris Cason, the vox actor for Tien Shinhan and Mr. Popo. All kidding aside, this is perplexing. In episode 1 ofKai, Sabat voices Grandfather Gohan, King Piccolo, and Piccolo—it isn't equally if Sabat wasn't already in that location. So, did Sabat decide not to do Turtle or did Funimation requite it to Cason? Sadly, it is a mystery that may forever go unsolved.
